Buy Nothing New Month 2026

This January, Keep Britain Tidy are inviting you to make a New Year’s resolution that will truly stick by taking part in Buy Nothing New Month (1st-31st January, 2026). The challenge is simple. For the month of January, make a commitment to buy nothing new, other than essentials like food and medicines.

Here at Bedford Credit Union, we are all onboard for saving money where we can, so we’ve put together some top tips to help buy nothing new this month.

  1. If you need a tent for a holiday, a pet carrier for the trip to the vets or a popcorn maker for a party, join your local Library of Things to borrow items for a small fee. Share Bedford and Share: Flitwick and Ampthill are two local organisations, plus Bedford Credit Union members can get half-price membership with Share Bedford!
  2. If you have a broken appliance, a knackered toy, or need a hole repairing in a pair of jeans, take our item along to a Repair Cafe to be fixed. Bedford Repair CafeLeighton Buzzard Repair CafeShare:Flitwick and Ampthill run events across the county.
  3. We’re not suggesting you don’t buy any new food during January, but it’s a good time to check your food waste and see if you can make improvements. As well as apps such as Olio and Too Good to Go, you can donate food or pick up free or cheap food that’s being diverted from landfill from local organisations Impakt FoodSurplus Supplies and Flitwick Community Fridge.
  4. If you miss the buzz of a new outfit, check out your local press for Swishing events in your area, or organise one yourself with your friends and family.
  5. Reward yourself each time you actively make a decision not to purchase something new by stashing what you don’t spend in your Bedford Credit Union savings account. You can watch your savings build in our app, and don’t forget to save up to £200 in a PrizeSaver account for the chance to win £5000 every month!
